Free Calls to the First World

Several new VoIP providers have entered the market in recent years, and with the transition to internet based calls has come cheaper long distance across the board. Most people have heard of Skype, which provides free PC-to-PC calls and charges about 2 cents/min for PC-to-phone calls made to any first world country. Some of you may remember a company called DialPad, which offered free PC-to-phone calling by popping ads in your face the whole time during the .com boom days. Though they didn’t go out of business, they now charge for all calls.

Now there is a service called VoipBuster that makes PC-to-phone calls FREE. You do have to put in a 5 euro deposit, but after that, calls to Australia, the US, and virtually all of Europe are free. The exception is European-style cell phones, which cost significantly more to call because the caller pays for the call when they call a cell phone in Europe while the call is free for the cell phone user.

If you make a lot of long distance calls and don’t mind sitting at your computer during them, then this is definetly a cost savings for you. Call quality seems to be as good or better than the traditional telephone, but you may notice problems when you are downloading or otherwise nearing the capacity of your internet connection. In that case, a switch/router with VoIP QoS will greatly improve your call quality. VoipBuster gives you free 1 minute calls to try the service out and test the quality for yourself, so there’s no risk in giving it a try.
